Dean Clough, Halifax, is a series of connected mills and industrial buildings that were originally occupied by Crossley's Carpets, once renowned as being the largest carpet manufacturer in the World. At its peak Crossley's employed more than 5,000 people and spanned a site of 116,000m2.
The Crossley family began operating on the site at the beginning of the 19th century, first with brothers John & Thomas and later with John's sons, John, Joseph and Francis, who built most of the buildings that remain today. The company traded as John Crossley & Sons for well over 100 years but after years of declining production it eventually closed in 1983.
That was just the end of one chapter for Dean Clough Mills however, and a new one began when the site was bought by a consortium led by Sir Ernest Hall. The consortium set about redeveloping the site and has gradually refurbished the buildings for various commercial uses. As a result, the site now houses art galleries, restaurants, a theatre, a gym, a hotel, NHS facilities and office space for around 150 companies. Please visit their website for further details.
